What you see under the eye rarely comes from the skin itself. It comes from what sits beneath it, which the skin can no longer hide. Three reasons.
The skin there is the thinnest on the body
A vessel, a hollow or a deposit of pigment becomes visible there while it would go entirely unnoticed on a cheek.
Fluid gathers there easily
Eyelid tissue is thin and loosely held, so a little fluid shows at once. Hence the morning puffiness, the day after a restaurant, the day after beer.
The terrain changes over the years
The hollow between the eyelid and the cheek deepens, and the shadow it casts reads as a dark circle although no colour has changed. In men past thirty-five that is the most common case, and also the one nobody identifies correctly.
It depends which kind, and four mirror tests tell you which one is yours.
Plenty of men have two at once, usually a hollow and a bluish tint. If the tests do not settle it for you, that is normal, and it is exactly what the consultation looks at.
What can be treated
The structural circle, a shadow
Light your face from below with your phone's torch. If the mark disappears, it is a hollow rather than a colour. It is the most common kind in men, and it is filled. A medical procedure.
The vascular circle, bluish
A blue or purplish tint often means vessels showing through. The colour comes from skin that has become too transparent, and it is that density that gets worked on.
The pigmented circle, brown
Gently stretch the skin under the eye. If the colour stays, it is pigment deposited in the skin. It is worked in a series, with formulas chosen for this fine area.
The fluid pocket
Compare on waking and at the end of the day. If the swelling reduces over the day, it is fluid, and drainage works exactly there.
What cannot be treated here
A pocket that does not change over the day
A bulge identical morning and night is a fat pocket, not fluid. That belongs to surgery, which the institute does not perform.
Complete disappearance
The area will stay naturally thin and the bone of your face will not change. What is realistic is a clear improvement, and nobody honest will promise you more.
Chronic lack of sleep
If you have been sleeping five hours for three years, no treatment compensates durably. That is not a refusal to treat you, it is an order of priority.
How we treat dark circles
Four approaches, and the right choice depends entirely on which test came back positive for you.
Everything turns on identifying the mechanism, and that is where most men get it wrong on their own. The consultation is free for that: we look together at what is actually happening under your eye, then we tell you what makes sense and what does not, and we send you to the physician when the call is his.

How do I know whether it is a hollow or a colour?
The torch test is the most reliable one and you can run it tonight. Stand in front of a mirror with your phone's torch held under your chin, pointing up, and watch the dark area. If it almost completely disappears, you have a hollow: what you take for a dark circle is a cast shadow, and no skin treatment will change it. If the tint stays visible whatever direction the light comes from, it is a genuine colour, and then the question becomes bluish or brown. In men past thirty-five the hollow is by far the most common, and also the one most often treated wrongly.
Why are mine worse than my partner's when I sleep more?
Because it barely depends on sleep. The main factor is anatomy: male bone structure often creates a deeper hollow under the eye, and that shadow exists regardless of how tired you are. Add to that the fact that nobody ever taught you to put sunscreen on that area, and twenty years of accumulated sun deposits pigment there. Sleep makes it worse; it does not create it.
Does drinking more water change anything?
A little, on one of the four kinds. If your problem is a fluid pocket that varies between morning and evening, then yes, hydration, salt and alcohol genuinely matter and you will see a difference by cutting the last two. On a structural hollow, a bluish circle or a pigmented circle, it changes nothing at all, and it is the most frequently given useless advice on the internet.
Is an eye cream worth anything?
On surface texture and hydration, yes, modestly. On a hollow, no. On a bluish circle, marginally and temporarily, by plumping the skin slightly. What is genuinely true is that daily sunscreen on that area stops a pigmented circle from worsening, and it is probably the highest-return free thing you can do. Beyond that, no cream changes the structure of the skin or the shape of your bone.
How long before I see a result?
Entirely dependent on which route, and the gap is enormous. Filler shows immediately, once the swelling has gone, so a few days. Drainage is felt the same day on a fluid pocket. Microneedling and PRP take weeks and are done in series, because the body needs that long to build collagen. If you have a fixed date, say so: it rules some options out rather than speeding any up.
Does it show afterward?
Depending on the route. Drainage leaves nothing at all. Microneedling leaves redness that is down by the next day. Medical procedures around the eye frequently leave bruises, the area being full of small vessels, and they can last several days. Do not book either of those in the two weeks before an event or photographs.
I smoke. Does that count?
Yes, and not by a little. Tobacco reduces microcirculation and speeds up collagen breakdown, which thins the skin around the eye precisely where it is already thinnest. It rules out no treatment and nobody here will lecture you, but it explains part of the result and it limits what holds over time. Worth knowing before you compare your result with someone else's.
