Massage therapy for men in Laval

An hour with nothing to solve, nobody to answer and nowhere to be. Back, neck and shoulders, worked by a massage therapist.

TYPE OF CARE

Massage therapy. No medical procedure.

What is massage therapy

Manual work on muscle and the tissue around it, done by a massage therapist. Isabelle is a member of the Réseau des massothérapeutes du Québec, number M-2265, and we hand you an insurance receipt at the end of every session.

What it does, honestly: manual work that can temporarily reduce a feeling of stiffness or discomfort, and relax you. It is work, not a pampering session.

What it does not do: find out where your pain comes from. A shoulder that has hurt for three months can come from plenty of things, and no pair of hands can settle which. If the pain is new or severe, if it is getting worse, or if it comes with a loss of strength or numbness, it gets assessed before it gets massaged.

The male reflex of waiting it out still has a price: the longer tension drags on, the less likely one visit settles it. You do not need to be in pain somewhere to come.

Is massage therapy right for you?

The work is on muscle and on what wraps around it.

It is for you if:

  • Your knot has a name and an address

Same trapezius, same side, every time. You know precisely where to press with a thumb, and it is never enough.

  • Your day happens in front of two screens

Eight hours leaning forward, shoulders up, chin out. The body eventually decides this is its natural shape.

  • You went back to training recently

A thirty-eight-year-old body does not absorb what a twenty-five-year-old one did. A return to the gym, a move, a weekend of renovation: those leave marks that no longer clear on their own.

  • You feel your body never switches off

A massage is neither a sleeping pill nor a treatment, but plenty of men leave more relaxed. If sleep itself is the problem, it gets looked at somewhere other than here.

Contraindications

A RECENT UNASSESSED INJURY

A torn muscle or a joint that has been swollen for days belongs to a health professional first. Massage comes after, not before.

PAIN THAT HAS NEVER BEEN LOOKED AT

New or severe pain after a knock, a loss of strength, numbness that settles in, pain running down an arm or a leg, or pain that worsens week after week: that gets assessed before it gets massaged. It is not necessarily a muscle.

A CALF THAT SWELLS ON ONE SIDE

A leg that swells suddenly, hot, red or painful, does not get massaged. It gets seen quickly. Massage stays a low-risk thing to do, but rare serious complications have been reported, including clots, nerve injuries and fractures.

A FEVER OR AN ACTIVE INFECTION

The session is rescheduled at no charge, so you can recover and so nothing gets passed to the team or to other clients.

A CLOT OR PHLEBITIS, KNOWN OR SUSPECTED

No massage until a health professional confirms it is safe to go back to it. Any other diagnosed vascular problem gets named when you book too: the session may have to be adapted, or need medical clearance.

SIGNIFICANT OSTEOPOROSIS OR RECENT SURGERY

Like a fracture, that does not necessarily close the door, but it changes the pressure and the areas worked. Say so before we start.

BROKEN SKIN ON THE AREA

A wound, a burn, a rash: the area is worked around, the rest of the body proceeds normally.

ANTICOAGULANT MEDICATION

It does not close the door, it changes the pressure used. Say so on arrival.

A facial for men

A treatment adjusted to your body

Two men do not get the same session, and three things explain why.

THE PRESSURE
It is the main setting, and it belongs to you. Plenty of men open with "as hard as possible": that is no guarantee of anything, since a muscle that defends itself does not release.
HOW LONG EACH AREA GETS
An hour is not enough to treat a whole body deeply. If the upper back is the subject, it takes half the session and the legs barely see anything.
WHAT YOUR DAYS ARE MADE OF
A man who drives six hours a day and a man who lifts loads do not carry it in the same places. Isabelle asks before starting, and it is not small talk.

The session step by step

Here is how a massage therapy session at Béa runs, step by step.

  • A massage therapist and a man talking before the session

    1

    What brought you in

Where it catches, since when, and what makes it worse. Three questions, two minutes.

  • A man settled face down on the table, a towel smoothed over his lower back

    2

    Getting settled

You stay covered by the sheet, and only the area being worked is uncovered at a time.

  • A forearm working deep along a man's upper back

    3

    Work on the loaded areas

The largest share of the time. Pressure gets discussed here, not before.

  • The therapist's hands resting still on a man's shoulder blades

    4

    Releasing

Broader movements to close, over the areas that were just worked deeply.

  • A man sitting up on the table, talking after the massage

    5

    What she noticed

Which area was most sensitive, where you tolerated less pressure, what felt stiffer on one side. Those are observations to build the next session on, not a diagnosis. The receipt is handed over here.

Why choose L'Institut Béa

  • A RECEIPT EVERY SESSION

Isabelle is certified in massage therapy at École Setsuko and a member of the Réseau des massothérapeutes du Québec, M-2265. What your insurer does with the receipt depends on your contract.

  • ONE PERSON, WHO KNOWS YOUR BACK

It is Isabelle every time. She picks your back up where she left it.

  • NO DÉCOR TO PUT UP WITH

No fountain soundtrack, no talk about energy if you do not want any. You come in for a back, you leave with a back.

Common questions

Everything people ask us before a first session, answered plainly.

I have never had massage therapy. What do I do when I arrive?

Nothing in particular, and it is the question men ask most on the phone. You come in, Isabelle asks where it catches, she steps out, you undress to whatever level suits you and you settle under the sheet. Nobody is ever uncovered: only the area being worked is exposed at a time, the rest of the body stays draped. There is no vocabulary to learn, no ritual, and you do not need to be in pain to come.

Is it actually reimbursed?

We hand you a receipt every session, and your insurer decides what to do with it. In Quebec, massage therapy is not governed by a professional order: what counts for your insurer is the association the person massaging you belongs to. Isabelle is a member of the Réseau des massothérapeutes du Québec, M-2265. Some plans require a doctor's note, others cap the annual amount, several recognise only certain associations. We cannot tell you in advance what you will get back. Check your annual allowance before booking. Plenty of men discover they have been sitting on an unused budget for years.

Is harder better?

No, and it is the most common misunderstanding among men. Too much pressure makes the muscle contract to protect itself, which is the exact opposite of the point. The marker is simple: you should clearly feel something working without having to hold your breath. If you are clenching your teeth, it is too much. That said, firm pressure is often needed on a man's back, the muscle mass being thicker, and that is why Isabelle works a great deal with the forearm and elbow.

How long does it hold?

A few days to a few weeks, depending on what created the tension. If the knot came from a one-off effort, a single session can settle it. If it came from your desk, it will come back, because the cause returns every morning at eight. In that case a monthly appointment maintains more than it cures, and the real lever is the height of your screen and how often you get out of your chair. Isabelle will tell you that rather than sell you a package.

Sixty or ninety minutes?

Sixty is enough for one area, typically the upper back and neck. Ninety becomes worthwhile as soon as you want legs and hips treated too, or if you are tall: on a six-foot-three frame an hour goes fast. For a first visit, sixty minutes already tells you honestly what this is worth to you.

I have a disc herniation. Can I come?

Yes, provided you say so and the diagnosis has been made. Massage does not treat a herniation, and it does not tell you what is causing the pain you feel day to day. What it can do is work the muscles around it and relieve you temporarily. Isabelle avoids direct work on the segment involved and adapts the positions. What is not possible is arriving with sharp new pain that has never been assessed: in that case a health professional goes first.

What if I fall asleep?

It happens constantly, including to men who announce on arrival that it will not. Nobody will wake you to chat and nobody will remark on it. It is generally a good sign.
