Wood therapy in Laval

Lighter legs and a less marked dimpling, in an hour that is entirely manual. Wood therapy is a firm body massage with wooden tools, chosen above all to work on the look of the dimpling on the thighs and buttocks, and for the feeling of lightness it can leave after the session.

NATURE OF THE TREATMENT

An esthetician's treatment. No medical procedure.

What is wood therapy

Wood therapy uses different wooden tools to apply gliding strokes, pressure and shaping movements on the tissue.

It is neither medical lymphatic drainage nor a treatment for circulation: it is a manual esthetic massage whose intended effects are mostly the feeling of lightness and the look of the surface.

It can temporarily improve the look of the dimpling in some people, through the mechanical work on the tissue. The result varies and generally calls for upkeep: it does not remove the deeper structure behind cellulite.

Real manual lymphatic drainage does exist here, done by Isabelle, a massage therapist, with far lighter pressure.

It is a treatment people choose as much for the relaxation as for its effect.

Is wood therapy right for you?

This treatment works on the look of the skin, and it often leaves a feeling of lightness.

It is for you if:

  • Your legs are heavy by the end of the day

Your legs get heavy or your ankles swell after a long day standing or sitting. If the swelling is significant, new, or mostly on one side, we point you to a health professional first.

  • The skin on your thighs or buttocks is dimpled

The dimpling on your thighs or buttocks bothers you, and you are after a firm manual approach rather than a device.

  • You want a manual treatment, with no device

Nothing hums, nothing heats, nothing stings. An hour of work done by hand.

  • You want an appointment that also feels good

The pressure is firm, but the session is lived as a massage rather than as a procedure.

If your goal is to lose a noticeable amount of volume, this treatment will not give you that

The body consultation is free and exists to point you toward what genuinely answers what you are after.

Contraindications

SUDDEN SWELLING IN ONE LEG ONLY

Especially with pain, warmth or redness. That is not massaged: it is assessed medically, and without waiting.

VARICOSE VEINS, PHLEBITIS OR A CLOT

We avoid firm pressure directly over a significant varicose vein. Phlebitis, a known clot or suspicious swelling rule the massage out and call for medical follow-up.

WHAT TO TELL US BEFORE THE SESSION

A blood thinner or a clotting disorder, recent surgery, a recent fracture or injury, known bone fragility, an illness or an infection in progress. The pressure adapts, or the session is postponed.

DAMAGED SKIN IN THE AREA

An open wound, irritation, an eczema flare or sunburn. The tools glide across the whole surface, so there is no way to work around a lesion.

PREGNANCY

In early pregnancy, we hold off. Later, the decision is made in consultation, with your doctor's or your midwife's agreement, and never on the abdomen.

The institute's wooden tools on their tray: textured rollers, cups and a shaping tool

A treatment adjusted to your body

The treatment uses three families of tools, and four things are set during the session.

WHICH TOOLS
Rollers for long gliding strokes, wooden cups for more localised work by suction, concave shaping tools to cover a large surface.
THE ORDER OF THE MOVEMENTS
We start with broader, more gradual movements, before using the tools and the more targeted pressure.
THE PRESSURE
It adapts to the area and to what your skin can take. You can have it adjusted at any point, without waiting until the end.
THE DIRECTION OF THE WORK
The sequence and the direction of the movements depend on the area and on the tool being used. Wood therapy remains distinct from true manual lymphatic drainage, whose pressure and technique are far lighter.

The session step by step

Here is how a wood therapy session runs at Béa.

  • Client and esthetician in conversation, the treatment room behind them

    1

    Body consultation

Free. We determine which areas to treat and we check that no contraindication applies.

  • Oil going on, hands and bottle

    2

    Applying the oil

It lets the tools glide without pulling on the skin. That is what makes the pressure bearable.

  • A wooden roller in a long glide down the calf

    3

    The roller strokes

The roller strokes begin the mechanical work on the area, with pressure that builds gradually.

  • A wooden cup on the thigh, close framing

    4

    The cups and the shaping

Area by area, at an intensity you can have adjusted at any point.

  • Hands resting flat on the back at the end of the session, lights low

    5

    Winding down

The session ends with gentler movements, to let the body settle.

Why choose L'Institut Béa

  • A FREE BODY CONSULTATION IF YOU ARE UNSURE

We first check whether what bothers you is mostly the dimpling, the swelling or the tone. If another treatment answers the goal better, we say so.

  • PRESSURE THAT ADAPTS

Wood therapy is firm, but you do not have to endure pain or significant bruising for the treatment to work.

  • TOOLS WE ACTUALLY SHOW YOU

Rollers, shaping tools and wooden cups are chosen by area and by the kind of movement we are after.

The space is gorgeous and zen. Yalenny did maderotherapie on my stomach to reduce bloating and I noticed results right away! I can’t wait to come back and try more services here, especially with Yalenny!

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask us before a first session, answered plainly.

Does it hurt?

The pressure is deliberately firm, but it should not be a pain you have to endure. It is felt more on some areas, typically the backs of the thighs and the inner arms. Say so straight away if an area becomes too sensitive: the pressure is adjusted during the session, without you having to wait until the end. Most clients describe the treatment as relaxing despite how firm the work is.

Does wood therapy leave bruises?

Small bruises can happen with a firm massage, especially if you mark easily. They are neither necessary nor the aim. Tell us if you take a blood thinner or if you bruise easily, so we can adapt the pressure. A large, very painful or unusual mark is worth reporting, and mention the date if your legs need to be on show soon.

How many sessions should I plan for?

There is no universal number of sessions. Where the goal is cosmetic, the effects of mechanical massage are generally temporary and call for regularity to be maintained. We set the rhythm from the area, from how you respond and from what you are after, rather than promising a package identical for everyone. Some people feel their legs lighter from the session itself. How long that feeling lasts varies, and it does not point to a lasting change in circulation.

What is the difference with a regular massage?

The main difference is the technique. Wood therapy uses wooden tools and generally firmer pressure, to work mechanically on the surface and subcutaneous tissue. A regular massage uses mainly the hands and aims more at relaxation or muscular tension, depending on the therapist's technique. And wood therapy is not the equivalent of manual lymphatic drainage. If your need is muscular, a tight neck, a tense back, massage therapy is what is indicated, and it comes with an insurance receipt, which is not the case here since this is an esthetic treatment.

Can it be done during pregnancy?

In early pregnancy, we hold off, and that rule applies to most of the institute's body treatments. Later, it is discussed case by case and never on the abdomen. Plenty of pregnant women are looking for relief for heavy legs, which is a real need: the decision is then made in consultation, with your doctor's or your midwife's agreement, not by booking online. If the answer is no here, it is not necessarily no for manual lymphatic drainage, which works with far lighter pressure.

Can wood therapy be done on the face?

The principle exists and is practised elsewhere, with much smaller tools. At L'Institut Béa, wood therapy is a body treatment, and that choice is deliberate: the face calls for a different approach and different training. For facial drainage, which is what many people are really after when they ask this, Isabelle's manual lymphatic drainage is what answers the need. If your question is about firmness or the jawline, the wrinkles and sagging page explains what belongs to the skin and what belongs to volume.

Wood therapy, pressotherapy or lymphatic drainage?

It is the most useful of the three questions, and it is settled on what bothers you. If it is mostly the dimpling, wood therapy: a firm massage with wooden tools, with a possible temporary cosmetic result. If it is mostly heavy legs and swelling, pressotherapy: sequential compression, 45 minutes, $45. If you are specifically after a manual drainage, lymphatic drainage: far lighter pressure, done by Isabelle, a massage therapist, with an insurance receipt.

Can it be combined with another body treatment?

Wood therapy and pressotherapy can be part of the same plan, but they do not answer exactly the same need: the first is aimed mostly at the massage of the tissue and the look of the dimpling, the second at the feeling of heavy legs and at swelling. Slimwave deals with the muscle underneath. Combining them is not automatically necessary, and the spacing matters: two firm treatments on the same area on the same day usually make for an uncomfortable next day without a better result.
