Waxing in Laval

Smooth skin as you leave, with no series to plan. Waxing removes the hair at the root, on the face as much as the body, including where the laser can do nothing.

A wax strip pulled away in one clean motion, the free hand holding the skin taut

NATURE OF THE TREATMENT

An esthetician's treatment. No medical procedure.

What is waxing

Waxing removes the hair straight out of its follicle, rather than cutting it at the surface the way a razor does.

The wax grips the hair along its whole visible length, and the strip takes it out whole. The follicle itself stays put: it has to grow a new hair, which takes several weeks to become visible again.

This treatment addresses unwanted hair on the face and body, peach fuzz and the areas you are not treating with laser.

It is the method that gives its result the same day.

For slower regrowth, the laser and electrolysis work differently, and we set the three side by side on one page.

Is waxing right for you?

It is for you if:

  • You want a result today

The laser calls for a series spread over several months. Wax gives its result in one visit.

  • Your hair is blonde, white or very light

The laser does not reach it. On a large area, wax remains the most practical method.

  • You are pregnant

Most treatments at the institute are postponed. Waxing, on healthy skin, stays possible.

Not sure the laser is worth the commitment for your area?

The laser consultation is free. It lets us assess your skin, the colour of your hair and what you are after, before you decide.

Contraindications

ISOTRETINOIN (ACCUTANE) TREATMENT

Accutane leaves the skin fragile enough that it can tear when the strip comes off, and the effect lasts several months after stopping. Always tell us.

RETINOL, TRETINOIN OR AN EXFOLIATING TREATMENT ON THE AREA

Some retinoids, and treatments that thin the surface of the skin, raise the risk that the wax takes skin along with the hair. Tell us about your products and your medication before a facial wax: we will tell you whether the session has to be pushed back.

IRRITATED OR BURNT SKIN

Sunburn, an eczema flare, an open wound or active irritation in the area: we postpone the session rather than working on skin that will not take it.

HAIR THAT IS TOO SHORT

This is not a medical contraindication, but it is worth one. Under about 5 mm, the wax slides without gripping the hair.

Wax spread on a calf with a spatula, in a thin layer

A treatment adjusted to your skin

The result depends on four settings decided on the spot, area by area.

THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WAX
Too cool, it snaps the hair instead of pulling it. Too hot, it can irritate or burn the skin. Its temperature is set for the area and checked before every application.
WARM WAX OR HOT WAX
Warm wax, Épilyss "Reine blanche", goes on in a thin layer with a spatula and comes off with a strip. That is the one for large surfaces: legs, arms, back. Hot wax, Cirépil, goes on thicker and comes off on its own, with no strip. That is the one for the bikini line, the underarms and the face: it grips the hair without pulling as hard on the skin.
THE DIRECTION OF THE MOVEMENT
The wax goes on in the direction of growth and comes off against it, flat, never upward.
HOW THE SKIN IS HELD
The free hand keeps the skin taut at the moment of removal. That makes for a cleaner pull and limits needless traction on the tissue, especially on sensitive areas.

The session step by step

Here is how your appointment goes.

  • The esthetician looking over the area, talking it through

    1

Checking the skin and the hair

We look at the state of the skin and the length of the hair, which has to be long enough for the wax to grip it.

  • Prep powder going on before the wax

    2

    Preparing the area

The skin is cleansed, then a powder absorbs moisture so the wax grips the hair rather than the skin.

  • The strip lifted away, the free hand holding the skin taut

    3

    The waxing

The wax goes on in the direction of growth and comes off in one clean movement, area by area.

  • Tweezing the stragglers, macro framing

    4

    Tidying up with tweezers

Hairs the wax did not take are picked up one by one, so the area is clean.

  • A soothing balm applied, gloved hands

    5

    Soothing and instructions

A soothing treatment ends the session, and we give you the instructions for the next 48 hours.

Why choose L'Institut Béa

  • A WAX CHOSEN FOR THE AREA

Sensitive areas and large surfaces are not worked the same way, nor with the same wax.

  • HYGIENE WE HOLD TO

Single-use spatulas. A spatula that has touched skin never goes back into the pot.

  • TWEEZER FINISHING

The stray hairs the strip leaves behind are picked up one by one, for a clean area.

Frequently asked questions

Everything people ask us before a first session, answered plainly.

Does it hurt?

There is a brief pull at the moment of removal, more noticeable on the bikini area and the underarms where the skin is thinner. It lasts a second and the sensation drops as soon as the next area starts. One thing genuinely helps: breathing out at the moment of removal rather than holding your breath. Tell us if you are apprehensive and the pace adapts.

Do I need to let it grow beforehand?

Yes, and it is what makes the most difference to the result. Hair that is too short slides under the strip and stays put, which leaves an area half done. Leave ideally 5 to 7 mm of length. Depending on your regrowth, that often works out to about two weeks without shaving. If you shaved three days ago, better to move the appointment.

How often should I come back?

It depends on your regrowth, and regrowth depends on the area. We give you your own interval at the end of the session, from what we have just seen on your skin and your hair. One thing matters more than the frequency: sticking to the same method. Avoid shaving between two waxes, and let the hair get back to a workable length before your appointment. Shaving does not change the biological cycle, but hair that is too short simply will not all be caught by the wax, and the result looks less even.

Can I go the same day as an event?

Better to plan for the day before. The redness generally goes within a few hours, sometimes a day on the bikini area or the underarms, and the heat of exercise or a sauna brings it back. The skin has just been through something and can stay more reactive for a while, to friction, to heat and to fragranced products. A fragrance-free soothing cream works very well.

What can I do about ingrown hairs?

Regular exfoliation, but not straight away. Exfoliating the same day irritates skin that has already been through something. After two or three days you can go back to gentle exfoliation, if your skin takes it. Do not rub an area that is still red or irritated. Ingrown hairs appear when the new growth stays trapped or curls back into the skin. If redness lasts beyond twenty-four hours or comes with bumps, tell us.

Does waxing damage the skin over time?

No, on healthy skin and with the right technique. What damages is a build-up of bad practice: going over the same spot several times, pulling without holding the skin taut, working on irritated skin. On healthy skin and with the right technique, reactions are usually temporary: redness, tenderness or small spots around the follicles. Ingrown hairs, folliculitis, stronger irritation or a change in pigmentation can happen to some people even so. There is one real change, though not the one people imagine: after years of pulling the hair out at the root, some follicles produce a finer hair.

I am in a laser plan. Can I wax between appointments?

No, not on the area being treated. Wax and tweezers pull the hair out of its follicle, and that hair is exactly what the laser aims at: without it, the session has no target. On an area under a plan, shave instead, following your esthetician's instructions. Wax stays useful on other areas, and once the plan is over.

Wax or laser, how do I choose?

Ask yourself two questions: the colour of your hair, and how much time you want to give this over the coming years. Dark hair and a wish to stop thinking about it, the laser is the right choice, even though it calls for a series over several months. A result today, light hair, pregnancy or no wish to commit to a plan, that is wax. Plenty of people use both, depending on the area. And if your hair is light and you want to be done with it, electrolysis is what to look at.
